Caleb stayed with me for a few days.

I never imagined I could literally do nothing for a few days in a row without feeling guilty. I usually either studied, read, or attempted to write something. Every time I simply took a break to have some tea or do anything else, the feeling of guilt crept inside me.

I suppose it was my way of filling the void of loneliness. Being busy always kept my mind out of other things.

But with Caleb, everything feels right. Every single minute we spent cuddling, talking, and eating delivery food was filled with comfort. It feels so okay with him.

However, both of us had duties to attend to, so he went back to work and I returned to writing my second book. Just as he promised, he called my university and they freed me from classes for a while, allowing me to fully focus on the book.

Despite feeling embarrassed before, as if I had no desire to hide behind my man's back and let him solve my problems, now it feels more than okay.

After leaving the apartment, I headed to the nearest café, feeling that I deserved to treat myself to something delicious before starting work. In Pinewood, there's only one decent café, and despite the neighborhood's bad reputation, this place feels like a pleasant oasis in a desert. It's a typical, minimalistic modern café with the delightful aroma of coffee beans and freshly baked pastries, which always makes me feel hungry even if I've eaten before.

What I appreciate the most about it is that it's never noisy and overly crowded, providing me with a space to think and enjoy my own company. It's no secret that I am not a fan of spending time in large groups of people, and in New York, there aren't many places with this kind of atmosphere.

In the end, there are a few advantages to living in the worst part of town.

I'm halfway through writing the fifteenth chapter, fully immersed in the process, when I notice someone taking a seat right opposite me from the corner of my eye. I grasp the edge of the laptop cover and slowly pull it down to see who is there.

«Lilith?» he asks, his face displaying a surprised expression. «Our new writer girl, huh?»

I adjust my glasses before forcing a tight smile. «Oh, it was just for the practice. Temporary.»

Grayson shakes his head. «Darling, I don’t think so. Your article exceeded all expectations. I think we’ll hire you as the head of our writer’s department.»

I want to feel flattered and pleased by his compliment, but I can’t. An odd sensation comes over me; it seems that Grayson isn't being sincere. When Caleb compliments me, I feel it deep within. I blush, and a whirlwind of butterflies stirs in my stomach, giving me confidence.

However, from Grayson, it feels like nothing more than empty words. And that's probably fine because this person has nothing to do with me, just as I have nothing to do with him.
